Comparison

The best email API for AI agents, honestly ranked

Eight options compared on what decides an agent build: whether it gets a real mailbox, whether a human has to sign up first, and what it costs. Including where we lose.

Short answer, as of 31 October 2026: AgentMail is the most complete email API for AI agents if a human can sign up once. Mailgi is the one to use if the agent must create its own address and send with no human and no wallet. Resend now has threaded Inboxes and is the natural choice for teams already on Resend. If the agent only sends, use a transactional provider.

The shortlist, side by side

Ordered by how much of the agent problem each solves out of the box, not by who wrote the page. Yes, we wrote it; we put AgentMail first on capability.

How to pick

Four questions settle it faster than any ranking. They are explained in depth in how to choose an email API for an AI agent.

01

Does the agent need to read mail, or only send it?

Send-only: use Postmark, Resend or SES and stop reading. Needs to read: you want a mailbox, so AgentMail, Mailgi, Resend Inboxes or Nylas.

02

Can a human sign up once?

If yes, AgentMail, Resend Inboxes and Nylas are all more feature-complete than Mailgi. If the agent must create its own address with nobody awake, Mailgi is built for exactly that.

03

Do you need search, threads or attachments today?

Mailgi has none of them yet. AgentMail and Resend Inboxes have search and threads; the transactional providers handle attachments.

04

How does the bill scale?

Plans with included volume (AgentMail, Resend, Nylas) are cheaper per message at steady high volume. Mailgi has no monthly fee and free receiving, so it is cheapest for many low-traffic agents; its $0.02 first-contact charge makes it expensive for cold outreach to many new addresses, which it is not for.

Each one in a paragraph

01

1. AgentMail: the most complete

YC-backed, $6M seed, threads, full-text search, IMAP and SMTP, WebSockets, pods for multi-tenant products, SOC 2 on the $200 plan. The default answer if a human can sign up once. See AgentMail alternative for where we differ.

02

2. Mailgi: no human, anywhere

One unauthenticated POST gives a program a real address that can send immediately. Free receiving, free mail between your agents, free custom domains, pay-as-you-go sending. No search, threading headers or attachments yet.

03

3. Resend: best developer experience, now with inboxes

Inbound since November 2025 and threaded Inboxes since 22 October 2026. A strong pick if your humans already use Resend. See Resend for AI agents.

04

4. Nylas Agent Accounts: mailbox plus calendar

Hosted mailboxes and calendars for agents, US or EU region on every plan. Beta since April 2026.

05

5. mails.ai: built around replies

Sending plus reply events with intent classification and a prompt-injection scanner. New in 2026.

06

6. Cloudflare Email Service: cheapest primitives

If your agent already runs on Workers, receiving is free and sending is $0.35 per thousand after 3,000 included. You build the mailbox yourself.

07

7. Postmark, Mailgun, SendGrid: transactional

Excellent at sending. Receiving is a webhook you catch and store. Right for notifications, wrong for an agent that needs to look back at last week's mail.

08

Not on the list: the Gmail API

Fine for one internal agent; painful for anything shipped to users. See should your AI agent use Gmail?

Questions, answered

01What is the best email API for AI agents?

If a human can sign up once and you need threads and search, AgentMail is the most complete option as of October 2026. If the agent must create its own address with no human involved, Mailgi is built for that. If the agent only sends, a transactional provider such as Postmark or Resend is the better choice.

02Which email APIs give each AI agent its own inbox?

AgentMail, Mailgi, Resend Inboxes and Nylas Agent Accounts all provide real mailboxes an agent can list and read. Postmark, Mailgun and SendGrid deliver inbound mail to a webhook instead, so you store it yourself.

03Is there a free email API for AI agents?

Several have free tiers: AgentMail (3 inboxes, 3,000 emails a month), Resend (3,000 a month), Nylas (3 accounts), mails.ai (1 agent). Mailgi has no monthly fee: receiving, registration and mail between your own agents are free, and outbound mail is $0.0005 per recipient from a prepaid balance.

04Which email API has an MCP server?

AgentMail, Resend, mails.ai, Cloudflare and Mailgi all offer one. Mailgi's is hosted at https://api.mailgi.xyz/mcp and every tool maps one-to-one to a REST endpoint.
